We’re Breaking Ground on 3 More Affordable Homes!
… and you’re invited to celebrate with us! Join us on Saturday, October 26th at 11am for our Groundbreaking Ceremony in La Conner!
We are so excited to break ground on three more permanently affordable homes this year, and most importantly, celebrate the beginning of an exciting journey for our three newest Homebuyers.
Located at the corner of Caledonia and Third Street, the ceremony will consist of remarks from government officials, Skagit Habitat team members, and our newest Homebuyers! This ceremony marks the beginning of construction on three local families’ future homes, as all Homebuyers will literally break ground on their respective lots. (We even have golden ceremonial shovels made specifically for this event.) This event is a direct result of Skagit Habitat for Humanity’s Homebuyer Program, helping low-income Skagit County residents achieve affordable homeownership.
The Homebuyer Program. How Does It Work?
In a nutshell, Skagit Habitat for Humanity helps low-income, hardworking families build and buy an affordable home. Specifically, we target Skagit County residents earning between 30-80% of the County’s AMI or $30,060 – $80,160 for a family of four. During the selection process, we look at need, prioritizing families who are currently living in substandard housing or who are spending more than 50% of the family’s income on rent.
After selection, our Homebuyers must complete 150 hours of volunteer work with Skagit Habitat before closing on their home. Our Homebuyers, along with their support team of friends and family, can complete these hours at the construction site, Skagit Habitat Store, or at special events hosted by our organization. Once construction is complete, our Homebuyers can close on an affordable mortgage set at no more than 33% of their gross family income.
Our Homebuyer Program is designed to be a sustainable solution to the housing crisis, offering a helping hand to our neighbors in need. Our Groundbreaking Ceremonies mark the beginning of a partner family’s journey to affordable homeownership and serve as an opportunity for our supporters to introduce themselves and offer words of encouragement. Our organization is all about bringing people together, and Groundbreaking Ceremonies are one of our favorite ways to!

Mark your Calendars and Celebrate with Us!
This is a HUGE accomplishment which calls for an equally large celebration! By this time next year, three more Skagit County residents will have a safe, secure place to call home. An affordable one that unlocks endless opportunities to boost their savings and invest in their families’ future.
Learn more about the importance of affordable housing from local advocates and the Homebuyers themselves! Light refreshments will be provided, and Hay Girl Coffee will be there with fun, Habitat-themed drinks for purchase. Parking is available off Third Street, and there will be plenty of volunteers helping direct traffic. See you there!
Thank you, Skagit Community!
Skagit Habitat for Humanity alone cannot make this happen. It takes a community, including donors, volunteers, corporate sponsors, and community partners, to make real change like this possible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting affordable homeownership and investing in your community. We appreciate you!
