Celebrating Skagit Habitat’s Groundbreaking Ceremony in La Conner
On a crisp Saturday morning in La Conner, three local families took the first step towards a future filled with stability and strength by breaking ground on their future affordable homes. Community members, local leaders, and Skagit Habitat staff gathered at the corner of Caledonia and S. 3rd St. to celebrate the beginning of three families journey towards permanently affordable homeownership. Saturday marked the first Groundbreaking Ceremony since February, 2023, a significant milestone for our commitment to expanding access to affordable housing across Skagit County.
Coming Together as a Community for Affordable Housing
As the event began, speakers from Skagit Habitat and local leaders took a moment to reflect on the importance of affordable housing in Skagit County. Housing costs in the county are continually on the rise, making it increasingly difficult for families to own a home. For these families, this groundbreaking isn’t just a ceremony, it’s the start of a new chapter, providing a foundation where stability, safety, and opportunity will grow for years to come.
But Saturday’s event wasn’t just about listening to staff and leaders. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from the homebuyers themselves. Each homebuyer brings a unique lived experience and perspective, but they’re united in their journey to build and buy a safe and affordable place to call home for their families.
Meet the Future Homeowners
Through Skagit Habitat’s Homebuyer Program, these families will work alongside volunteers and community members to build their homes, completing 150 hours of sweat equity labor through volunteer opportunities hosted by Skagit Habitat. We are partnering with Rocio’s, Tarra’s, and Steven and Steffanie’s family to build and buy their homes in La Conner.
